"We're spending how much?!"

Continuing with our fantastically fun fiscal theme, do you have any idea how much money will be spent this holiday season? Well, neither did I. That is, until I saw this press release by the United States Census Bureau. See how much money we spend helping Santa out, find out the value of U.S. toy imports, and much more!

You owe $13.7 trillion!

Well, not really. That's how much the United States government currently owes (AKA "the national debt"). You probably heard a lot about the national debt during the recent midterm elections. Well, now is your chance to fix the debt and put the U.S. on track to solvency. Go for it!

FIX THE BUDGET! (courtesy of the New York Times)

When you're done playing, check out these other sites for the latest data and information on your money. What you thought it was the government's money? Well, the government's money comes from somewhere...it comes from you! And you, and you....

Congressional Budget Office
White House Office of Management and Budget
Bureau of the Public Debt (an agency of the U.S. Treasury)

Don't know your deficits from your debts? Start right here with Federal Budget 101 (PDF) -- an awesome introduction (or refresher!) for us all.

Find Library Books the EASY Way!

The O’Grady Library is proud to announce the debut of WorldCat Local (WCL), a dynamic new way to find what you need. With one simple search box, WorldCat Local puts you in the driver’s seat, letting you search for books, videos, and articles—or everything at once.

BP and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Many of today's college students were not yet born when the Exxon Valdez oil spill took place in 1989 off the coast of Alaska. The legacy of that disaster lives on, and until April 20, 2010, it was the worst oil spill disaster the United States had ever seen. We do not yet know what the final economic and environmental price tag of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill will be; however, we know that we will be paying it for years to come.

Ongoing coverage from Louisiana newspaper The Times-Picayune

Official emergency response page from the State of Louisiana

Official emergency response page from the White House

Official site of the Deepwater Horizon Unified Command (site established by the U.S. Coast Guard)

Gulf of Mexico response page from BP

The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trust Council - established to oversee the $900 million legal settlement. For an eye to the future, visit this page and imagine what sort of years-hence response might be established in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon spill. What will the 20th anniversary report look like? What sorts of restoration projects will have been undertaken, and how successful will they be? Will the United States reach the 20th anniversary of the Deepwater Horizono oil spill without having had yet another such disaster? Only time will tell.

The Economy and Health Care Reform

The economy: between health care reform, unemployment, and the budget, it seems like everyone's talking about the economy these days. There are a lot of talking heads on tv, online, and just about everywhere else. So what if you want "Just the facts, ma'am?" I suggest checking out the Beige Book, a brief "State of the Economy"-type document that is published by the Federal Reserve 8 times a year. It's short and provides a very nice snapshot of how the United States is doing. Warning: there are zero pundits beating each other over the head.

Health care reform: in case you were wondering how health care reform might impact your community, check out the House Committee on Energy and Commerce's congressional district-by-district analysis of the reform bill. Need to brush up on the subject so you can figure out what the heck they're talking about? The Wikipedia article on health care reform debate in the United States is a fine place to start. And remember the student loan reform that got tucked into the health care reform bill? Current Saint Martin's University students, you are probably not going to see much of a difference from whatever your current situation is.

A few of my favorite blogs

Boing Boing -- Best. Blog. Ever. If you like science, art, literature, technology, and culture, then Boing Boing is the blog for you. The interests of the contributors are wide-ranging (steampunk, evolutionary biology, design, geek culture, physics, music, privacy and copyright issues) and the rotating weekly guest bloggers bring more in-depth looks at specific topics (New Orleans jazz society, "dangerous" chemistry). You'll never be bored with BoingBoing around.

ShelfTalk -- Reading & viewing recommendations on various topics from the librarians at Seattle Public Library. Want to read more vampire novels? Watch David Tennant? Discover French fiction? Their suggestions can get you started.

On An Overgrown Path -- A former BBC classical music radio DJ covers the classical music world. One of his major interests in the intersection of music and spirituality and the expression of religious faith through music. I've discovered a number of exciting works and composers through this blog.

ScienceBlogs -- The name says it all. Check it out.

March Honors Women

March 8th was the International Women's Day and the month of March honors Women's History. Take a look at womenshistorymonth.gov for a wealth of resources on the subject, brought to you by The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Saint Martin's University women celebrated by reading their poetry and writings during the Friday Faculty Lunch Series last week. Below are some of the faculty and staff reading their work. All photographs by Dr. David Suter.

Anne Guttman reads poems (Acer Macrophyllum, Grey Lady and Submarines)

Teresa Tillson reads poems (The Dowagers , Marie and Albert, The Exchange and The Clumsy Prophet)

Olivia Archibald, reads writing (Awakening and Holy Land)

Julie Yamamoto reads personal stories (Selections from Weekly Updates)

Not pictured here, Kathleen McKain also read her creative nonfiction, Being Flaubert by Way of Borges.

Health Reform

There are potential changes afoot with respect to health care in the United States. On the one hand, you might examine the latest plans set forth from the White House. You might also examine the Republican perspective, thereby gaining a well-rounded view on both sides of this contentious issue.

For all you future policy wonks -- and I know you're out there! -- nothing talks like numbers.

You could look at this lovely collection of U.S. health-related budget data from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office. Or perhaps you are looking for data on a particular thing, such as emergency department visits: click here to figure out exactly what source has the data you want. And if you're not quite sure what you want, but you know you need data on the cost of health care and health insurance, visit the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey.

New library web site

As you can see, Saint Martin's has a new web site and the library has migrated its pages to the updated format. The change gives us an opportunity to have more interactive content, including posting titles of the most recent library and Curious blog entries. We've also added quick search boxes on the home page and on several other pages. As importantly, we've expanded the left-side menu so you that you should be able to find the page you need in fewer clicks.

This was a rapid roll-out, and there are likely a few broken links. We are checking the site and will continue to repair links and add and update content over the next few weeks. One key page that is not working is Locate a journal title. We hope to have this problem resolved in the next few days.

Let us know what you think of the new site. We welcome your comments.
